Mars Hill Is The Place To Live, Work, Learn & Play

Mars Hill is synonymous with education; the town was formed in conjunction with the predecessor to today’s Mars Hill University. In the 1800s, there were four families living in the area that wanted a place for their children to receive a quality education. As a result, they formed the French Broad Baptist Institute. Moved by Acts 17:22 in the Bible, the Institute and the town were renamed Mars Hill. Today, the campus, known as Mars Hill University, is located on the largest educational historic district in North Carolina.

Bascom Lamar Lunsford, known as the Minstrel of Appalachia, was born in Mars Hill. His instruments, music, and notes are preserved at the Mars Hill University. Each October, the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Music Festival is held in his honor and features music and dance from the area’s most talented artists.

The Blackberry Festival is held in August and is a festival of everything blackberry, music, arts, and community spirit. The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre has performances from June to August. In October, the Madison County Heritage Festival is held on Main Street.

The Mars Hill area is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, which means great views are a given. Mountain activities including hiking, cycling, camping, and exploring are popular leisure activities. The numerous farms in Mars Hill and the surrounding areas offer agri-tourism opportunities as well. Wintertime in Mars Hill means skiing, sledding, and skating for children and adults.

Between those managed by the City of Mars Hill and the University, there are plenty of sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, swimming pools, and even a disc golf course for residents to enjoy.
