Anatomy of Your Chimney

Sometimes, you will hear us talk about top-mounted dampers and throat dampers. Here are two diagrams that illustrate the differences between the two types of dampers.

Throat Damper

A throat damper is located just above the firebox, and is controlled by a lever in the firebox. Below, you will find a diagram of a chimney with a throat damper.

Top-Mount Damper

This next diagram shows the anatomy of a chimney with a top-mount damper. Top-mounted dampers are located at the top of the chimney flue, and are controlled with a chain in the firebox.
